Founded in 1896, Clayesmore offers one of the most innovative, dynamic and forward-looking curriculums in the UK. Located in the beautiful county of Dorset, just two hours from London Heathrow airport, the school is situated on a beautiful 62 acre campus and offers an outstanding education for pupils aged 2-18.
Clayesmore is no slouch in terms of pupils achieving great academic results. 87% of last year’s Upper Sixth gained entry into their first choice of university. Older students are able to tailor-make their academic programme, with A Levels, BTECs and the ability to study an EPQ on offer in the Sixth Form. It is not unusual for pupils to take extended BTECs (equivalent to 2 A Levels) and achieve Distinction*. Students go on to a range of universities, studying Medieval and Modern Languages at Cambridge, Law and Engineering at Russell Group universities, RADA and Bristol Old Vic, art foundation courses, degree apprenticeships and everything in between.
Here, every child is valued and respected and taught in ways which help them to do well academically and socially, so they will flourish, not just in their examinations but at university, at work and in their wider life, too. We consciously develop the personal skills and human qualities needed in adulthood, and attitudes that will enable a young person to thrive long after they have left school.
Clayesmorians throw themselves into everything: they have a go! We welcome students who want to work hard and try new things; who want to learn how to learn. You could play in an instrumental group, engage in debate in the Model United Nations programme and join the Clayesmore Theatre Company. There are lots of opportunities both to try something new, or to hone an existing area of interest.
Sport is taken very seriously at Clayesmore, with pupils playing at top levels and elite athletes coaching our teams. Individually and as part of teams, pupils achieve success at national, regional and county levels, in traditional sports such as hockey, cricket, rugby, football and netball, as well as in dressage and equestrian eventing. Our cricketers regularly feature in Wisden, and have recognised by The Cricketer Magazine as one of the top 100 schools for cricket for the past four years. There are current pupils and recent leavers in national and international development squads for hockey, netball, rugby, squash and Olympic trap shooting.
The range of art, drama and music at Clayesmore is exceptional, with much of it pupil-led. Students regularly go on to the top art schools in the UK, to study fine art photography, fashion or ceramics; while musicians go on to the Royal Academy, Royal Holloway and the Royal Northern College of Music. Countless opportunities exist to perform and to take music exams and LAMDA examinations. You may like to become a member of the Clayesmore Theatre company, or submit work for the our annual film festival. Whatever your interest you will be encouraged by skilled, patient, enthusiastic staff who will help you to take it to the highest level.
There are over 140 clubs, activities and societies to get involved in, from ani-medics to archery, bush craft, barbershop group, climbing, cryptography and lifeguarding and everything in between, there’s even a student-run radio station. There’s a focus on the importance of service, too, with CCF, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Young Enterprise and Model United Nations and a programme in collaboration with a local school for children on the autistic spectrum.
Above all, Clayesmore is a school with forward-thinking vision leading the way with dynamic and innovative approaches to teaching, which produces young people with confidence, compassion and ambition.
